FAQS

General

What are your opening times?

We are open from 7:30am till 6:00pm, Monday to Friday. We are open 51 weeks of the year (closed between Christmas and New Year). We are also closed for Bank Holidays.

Can my child bring in their comforts (e.g. dummies and blankets)?

Of course. We acknowledge that children may require their comforts when they are first settling in to our setting. We work in partnership with parents to agree a suitable time to ween a child away from using those comforts.

What happens when my child is ready to move in to the next age range?

When a child begins to show signs that their current environment isn’t challenging them as much as it was, we will speak to their parents about moving them into the next age band. This will often follow the approximate age bands of the rooms but will always be determined by the individual child and their development.

Where do you go for outings?

In and around the local area.

How many children are in each room?

We always adhere to the floor space and adult to child ratio requirements in the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. Those ratios are as follows:
Babies 1:3
Toddlers 1:3
Juniors 1:4
Pre-school 1:8
Our Centres can hold a lot of children each day but, with the exception of our one Baby Room, we have multiple rooms in each age-range to keep our room sizes small.

What ages do you care for?

We care for children aged 3 months up to 5 years old.

How do I settle my child in?

Before your child can begin with us they will have two settling in sessions, both an hour long and free of charge. For the first, you and your child will spend the hour having fun in their new room, this hour is for you, your child, and your child's Key Person to get to know each other. We will ask a few questions about your child, including their routines, special requirements, likes, dislikes and family. This is also a chance for you to ask anything you may want to know about the Centre and the experience your child will have. For the second settling in session, you will settle your child into their room and when you're ready, you will join our Management team in the office to complete the paperwork and they can answer any questions you may have.

Learning and Development

How often will I be updated about my child’s development?

Every day your child is with us, we will telll you about their day through a detailed and personal handover. In addition to their daily activities, we use several  different ways to communication with you about your child's development including the use of Famly an online learning and communication platform that parents can access anywhere, anytime. We hold regular Parents Evenings and promoteopen and regular conversations in between.

How do ABC support children with additional needs?

We have an Additional Support Officer who will, in collaboration with Parents and the Centre SENCO, assess and support any and all children with additional needs. The support offered will always be appropriate to the individual child's individual needs.

We also work in close partnership with the Local Support Teams to ensure we are accessing the appropriate level of expertise and assistance.

Daily Routines

What is the daily routine?

All babies have their own individual routine and we work in partnership with parents to facilitate those individual needs.

Our meal times and sleep times are detailed below and in between those times, the children are engaged in both child-initiated learning through play and adult led activities.

When and where do the children sleep?

Babies sleep, as and when their individual needs and routine dictate, in a separate cot room.

Toddlers and Juniors sleep after lunch on specifically designed, child-sized mattresses in a designated sleep room.

Pre-school children sleep when needed on specifically designed, child-sized mattresses or on cushions in a cozy corner of their room.

How often do the children go outside?

We go to great lengths to ensure the outdoor learning environment is as stimulating and challenging for the children as the indoor rooms. We have glass canopies and separate sheltered areas to ensure the children access the outdoors every day, regardless of the weather. We invite our parents to provide suitable clothing and footwear to allow their children outdoor play all year round.

How often do you change the children’s nappies?

All children in nappies are changed at 10am, 1pm, 3:30pm and of course as and when required in between those times.

Do you do Potty Training?

Potty training is a developmental milestone and we always work in partnership with parents to help a child to gain independence in using the toilet when the child is ready.

Food and Drink

How do you cater for dietary requirements?

We pride ourselves on our ability to cater for every child's individual dietary requirements, including allergies, likes and dislikes.

When are meal times?

We serve the children:
- breakfast between 8:15am and 8:30 am
- cooked lunch at 11:00am
- snack at 1pm
- afternoon tea at 3pm

Can we bring in snacks for our children?

We provide breakfast, a cooked lunch and afternoon tea but parents are welcome to give their children an additional healthy snack. To avoid allergy and choking hazards, we have a list of “Suitable Snacks”. Any foods brought in to the centre that are not on the list will be given to your child at the discretion of Centre Management.

Security and Safety

What if I can’t personally collect my child?

On enrolment, you provide the details of any other responsible person allowed to collect your child and you must make us aware that that person will be collecting your child that day. Until we are familiar with that person, we will ask to see their photo ID to check their details against the enrolment form you completed.

What happens if I’m running late to pick up my child?

If you are unable to collect your child before 6:00pm, please call the Centre as soon as you are able and before 6:00pm, to let us know. We will always ensure that your child is safe and cared for until you arrive. There will be a fee payable

How secure is the nursery?

All internal doors have handles beyond the reach of children and all emergency exit doors that are not immediately connected to a playroom, remain locked throughout the day. The centres are surrounded by high quality fencing and operate two stage access system via the front door. There is CCTV in the corridors and outdoor areas and all the internal gates are secured with carabiner clips. To prevent people outside of the building seeing in, all windows with public access are tinted and curtains are used during the winter months. All external gates on the grassed areas are combination locked, the codes of which are known by restricted personnel only.
